Thailand has law to ban beach cigarettes

In November, a new law will be introduced in Thailand prohibiting smoking on more than 20 beaches in the country. Bathers who smoke can be sentenced to one year in prison or must pay a fine that will cost more than $ 9,500, according to Travelmole’s information.

The new rule was implemented after Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources stated that thousands of cigarette butts were left in the sand and only a stretch of about 2.4 kilometers from Patong Beach in Phuket were collected close to 138,000 .

The law will take effect next month and will apply to the beaches of Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chon Buri and Songkhla provinces, and includes the popular resorts of Koh Samui and Pattaya, according to the Bangkok Post. However, it can be extended to all beaches if it is successful.
