Airbus receives ANAC certification for its new A320neo

Airbus has been certified by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) for its SHort AiRfield Package (SHARP), an exclusive combination package of modifications in aerodynamics, flight control, braking and software aimed at improving takeoff and landing capabilities Of the A320neo model in complex airports. The SHARP solution will bring new efficiency to Brazilian airlines operating at Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) in Rio de Janeiro, such as Avianca Brasil and Azul, allowing them to maximize their capacity and profitability.

The SDU is one of five airports that operate flights for leisure and business tourism between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the two most populous cities in Brazil. The route between SDU and Congonhas Airport (CGH) in São Paulo is the fourth largest in the world in terms of passenger traffic and is very profitable for Brazilian airlines. Operationally, however, the SDU is a challenging airport. Its runway is only 1,323 meters and has obstacles at both ends, which reflects on the takeoff and landing performance of the aircraft. The SHARP solution, available for new or retrofit aircraft, will allow airlines to operate with maximum passenger capacity in this strategic market.

ANAC joins other major aeronautical authorities that have already certified SHARP in July 2017, such as the European Aeronautical Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aeronautical Administration. Azul, and Avianca Brasil, soon after, chose SHARP for their growing fleets of A320neo and are the first two airlines in the world to contract the package.

SHARP is the result of collaboration between Airbus, its customers and engine manufacturers (CFM and Pratt & Whitney). Its aim is to increase the cargo capacity for airlines operating at complex airports and ensure a sustainable and competitive advantage to their A320neo fleets. The key components of the set is a modification of the Kevlar composite panel to the “Fairing Fillet Fairing” wing to allow better landing performance and vortex generators attached to the vertical plane of the tail that improve takeoff performance.

Avianca Brasil operates nearly 50 A320 Family aircraft, including four A320neo models, two A330s models and one A330 Freighter. Azul ordered 35 aircraft and 28 commitments with tenants from the A320neo Family and currently operates eight A320neo and six A330 models. With over 1,000 aircraft sold and a backlog of around 450, nearly 650 Airbus aircraft are operating throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Over the past 10 years, Airbus has tripled its operating fleet and since 1990 has completed more than sixty percent of net orders in the region.
