Government releases resources for FP to reissue passports

The bill that frees up R $ 102.3 million so that the Federal Police can resume the issue of passports was recently approved by the Joint Committee on Budget (CMO) of Congress. The matter still needs to be approved by the plenary of the Congress, which is expected to happen later this week. The issue of passports has been suspended for a week for lack of resources to produce the documents.

The project, which frees up resources from the Union in favor of the Ministry of Justice and Citizenship, reinforces the budget of the Federal Police to guarantee passport emissions by the end of this year. The funds will be allocated by the National Treasury and will come from cuts, in the same amount, of funds destined for Brazil’s participation in the United Nations (UN), under the supervision of the Ministry of Planning.

“More than 100,000 people in recent days have stopped receiving passports,” said project rapporteur, Deputy Delegate Francischini (SD-PR). The budget forecast for this year for the construction of passports was R $ 145 million, an amount fully committed until June. Each person currently pays a fee of R $ 257.25 for the issue of a common passport (blue color).

“Around eight thousand to nine thousand passports / day have ceased to be issued since Tuesday [27], harming thousands of people,” said Francischini.

The deputy presented an amendment to the Law of Budgetary Guidelines (LDO) prohibiting government contingency to collect the passport issuance rates.
