Hotel industry in São Paulo grows

At short steps, São Paulo continues to increase the number of visitors it receives each year. Generally remembered for being a power in the emissive, the city continues at the top of the national ranking of foreign and Brazilian visitors, loaded mainly by business and events. More than 15.4 million travelers passed through the metropolis last year, an increase of 3.76% compared to 14.9 million in 2016; of them, 2.75 million are international. The information was revealed on Thursday (18) by SPTuris.

The information is part of the dossier “São Paulo: City of the World”, launched in 2017 by the São Paulo government and consolidates the general data of São Paulo Tourism. “The objective is to have a single, permanent and always updated document that gathers information and data provided by entities that measure the number of tourists in the city, in addition to its effects, “explained the director of SPTuris, Eduardo Colturato.

Hospitality in high
The high number of visitors reflected in good results in the hospitality of São Paulo. Hotel occupancy increased 5.5% in the period, closing the year at 64.9% – with a small help from the drop in the average daily rate of 0.6%, reaching R $ 293.42.

The data are also significant if we count only the weekends, a period in which the increase of 4.2% and reached 59.1% of occupation – a fact highlighted by the coordinator of the Tourism Observatory of SPTuris, Fabio Montanheiro, since the capital of São Paulo is remembered for being a business destination, with more visitors during the week.

“Corporate and event tourism is and always will be the strongest,” commented Montanheiro. “But the growth in leisure tourism is clear to us, and the increase in international shows, for example, attracts both foreigners and domestic travelers, who have 70% of their audience coming from outside. , as the street carnivals that exploded in the last year also increased leisure travel, “he exemplifies.

The hostels, on the other hand, performed worse, with a drop of 2.5% in occupancy and a 37.6% average stay (R $ 37.17), a decrease credited to the increase in alternative lodging – Airbnb is the clearest example.

Aerial and stable buses
As for transport, both air and road had an increase, although less relevant than the hotel segment. The survey of airports by SPTuris, which in addition to Guarulhos and Congonhas also included Viracopos, indicated a total number of 66.8 million passengers in the year arriving or departing from the city, against 66.5 million in 2016 (an increase of 0.3 %).

Passengers on São Paulo’s three main buses (Tietê, Barra Funda and Jabaquara) totaled 15.4 million in 2017, a small increase of 1.3% compared to 2016, when this number was 15.2 million .

Tax collection grows
Amidst the highs of the market, taxes were also high, more specifically the Tourism Service Tax (ISS). Just last year, R $ 291 million in tourist service fees were collected in São Paulo, an increase of 5% against the R $ 277.4 million in 2016. It is worth remembering that this tax includes not only the amounts spent by tourists in the city , but also by paulistanos who pay travel agencies, for example.
