Brazil ranks seventh in the Sustainable Tourism Index: improving the global tourism environment. The ranking was made by the intelligence unit of the British magazine The Economist, which evaluated ten countries. Brazil lagged behind France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan, developed countries that have invested more in tourism policies and incentives as a sustainable destination. In addition to these, he was also behind India.
The index takes into account 19 qualitative and quantitative indicators, divided into five categories: political and regulatory environment, environmental sustainability, socio-cultural sustainability, economic sustainability and the travel and tourism industry. The list was published by the Viajar Verde website, which discloses environmental protection actions and initiatives.
Of the points that favored Brazil in the list of sustainable tourism, the magazine highlights air quality, CO2 emissions per dollar of GDP and responsible use of water. Already the political and economic crisis, the violence and the tourist infrastructure left to be desired, and pulled the position of Brazil more down.
Regarding the environmental impact, environmental performance and growth of tourism, Brazil received positive points. On the other hand, the effectiveness of marketing and branding to attract tourists, number of jobs in the sector, government spending on tourism, international tourist arrivals, among other issues, received negative scores for the country.
