Named the best island destination in the world, Madeira Island has attractions that go beyond its lush landscape and well-preserved nature. Here, art lovers will discover that Madeiran cities are also inspiring fountains with classic and contemporary works in its immense variety of museums.
Its capital, Funchal, managed to take the art out of its museums with the project “Open Doors”, in the Old Town. The objective was to encourage art and culture with works exhibited at the doors of disabled establishments. The artists explored painting, photography, writing and sculptures, bringing life and colors to the streets of the historic center. This is the ideal starting point to start a trip through the incredible catalog of Madeiran works.
Housed in the emblematic Molhe building, the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Nini Andrade Design Center has a privileged view of the city and the ocean. The elegant interior houses permanent art exhibitions, as well as pieces from the famous Madeiran designer collection, a shop, a café and a restaurant. With star chefs and a sophisticated menu, it combines gastronomic creativity with a passion for tradition.
After a cable car ride towards Monte, head to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. In addition to being a true work of art from nature, it is home to the Monte Palace Museum with its impressive African sculptures from the 1950s. Among the attractions are works by renowned artists such as Henry Munyaradzi and Bernard Matemera of the famous Tengenenge village, in Zimbabwe.
Another interesting place to visit is the Arts Center – Casa das Mudas, in Calheta, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madeira, considered one of the five best in Portugal. Opened in 1992, its collection includes Portuguese works that date back to 1960. The museum itself is magnificent and still includes many exhibitions and events by well-known names such as Francis Bacon, David Salle, Eric Fischl, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. It is also possible to attend congresses, dance performances and concerts, according to the schedule.
The Museum of the Institute of Embroidery and Tapestry of Madeira holds a collection of the finest and most valuable embroidery of the 19th and 20th centuries, which is still an essential part of the local culture. If you have an extra time, do not miss the Museum of Sacred Art, Quinta das Cruzes in Funchal, Casa Colombo in Porto Santo.
