Mexico reaches 8th place among the most visited countries in the world

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has unveiled its World Tourism Barometer, which includes the annual ranking of the world’s most visited countries. Mexico rose from 15th to 8th among the most visited countries in the world in 2016, having received more than 35 million international tourists and achieved a growth rate of 9%, twice the global average of the sector.

According to Enrique de La Madrid, Mexico’s tourism minister, these results are a source of pride, as this is the third consecutive year that destination has been well placed on the UNWTO list. “Today is a day to be celebrated both by the public sector and the private sector. And also for the more than nine million Mexicans who work daily in the industry, feel immensely proud. ”

Since 2013, Mexico’s international tourism has grown at an annual average of 10%, twice the overall industry average. The growth was due to the great diversity of attractions, such as being a mega-biodiverse country and offering ecotourism, adventure, gastronomy, luxury, as well as cultural events of great relevance such as F1 and NFL.

UN Secretary-General Taleb Rifai says the riches of fate go beyond his landscapes. “It offers diversity and richness also in its population, cuisine, variety of its traditions and cultures and much more”.

The Mexican government, the Minister of Tourism, Enrique de la Madrid, and the tourism sector worked on a strategic plan to continue the industry’s leading growth. The goal is to reach 50 million international tourists by 2021. For this, partnerships are held in the sector, including airlines, hotels, tour operators and others.
