Peru is elected the “Best Culinary Destination”

Peru received the “Best Culinary Destination” award in the world, while the Machu Picchu Archaeological Complex was awarded as “Best Tourist Attraction” at the last edition of the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA). It is the sixth consecutive year that this happens. Promperú celebrated the titles and emphasized that the awards are elected from online voting in which professionals, businessmen from the sector and travelers from different places participate.
“These recognitions that we receive as a country are the result of the work we are doing to promote our tourism resources and our gastronomy. These awards put us before the eyes of the world, especially the elite of the travel industry. That is why we will continue to work to keep ourselves in the first place and thus contribute to improving the quality of life for all Peruvians whose well-being depends on the growth of international tourist arrivals, “said Isabella Falco, Image Director at Promperú.
According to a study carried out, the main reason to visit Peru is to know Machu Picchu. However, the gastronomy is already among the motivating aspects of travel. The same report indicates that 82% of the tourists who visit Peru consider Peru as a gastronomic destination, and 25% say that knowledge about Peruvian gastronomy has grown in their countries of origin.
Promperú has been promoting the country in recent years. The new international tourism campaign “Peru, the richest country in the world”, invites tourists to get to know the Peruvian destinations. In 2016, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu received 1.4 million visitors and shows a growth of 6% in the last five years. According to TripAdvisor, 98% of the tourists who visited it had a positive rating.
Currently, there are three Peruvian restaurants that are on the list of 50 Best Restaurants in the World: Central (5th place), Maido (8) and Astrid & Gastón (33); and there are 10 restaurants that are on the list of 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America: Maido (1), Central (2), Astrid & Gastón (7), Osso Carnicería y Salumería (12), La Mar ), Rafael (24), Malabar (30), Fiesta (46) and Ámaz (47).
