Nazareth and giant waves

Nazareth used to be best known for its attractive cuisine and the peculiar “Nazarenes”, ladies of Nazareth who usually dress in black, with head scarves and the traditional Portuguese skirts, and sell the famous dried fish of Nazareth in the streets of Nazareth. Why, then, did this quiet village become a mecca for big-wave surfers?

Recently, the world has known the power of the giant waves of Nazareth, more specifically in Praia do Norte. Giant waves crash into the shore attracting surfers to real challenges, such as Rio de Janeiro sportsman Maya Gabeira, who surfed a 24-meter wave last week – the equivalent of an eight-story building. The fact was so impressive that it is possible for the Brazilian to enter the book of records.

The giant waves happen because of the Nazareth Canyon, a kind of underwater crevice on the coast of Nazareth with a depth of at least 5,000 meters and 230 kilometers in depth. This created the water mountains of Nazareth, recognizable in postcards and YouTube clips, and curious subjects that attract the eyes of people from all over the world.

Although Praia do Norte attracts world attention, Nazaré not only has giant waves and powerful waves, but also points and waves accessible to all athletes, even for beginners who wish to learn the delicious adventure of surfing.
