Office sponsors first electronic garbage collection network in São Paulo

The Monaco Tourist Office is sponsoring an unprecedented initiative in Latin America that will install junk mail collection points in the city of São Paulo. The project was developed by the Greenk Movement, created to raise awareness and mobilize society for the correct disposal of electronic waste. The implementation of the 15 points will take place from March 2018. The collectors will be positioned in parks and public places, defined jointly with the city hall, aiming to facilitate and encourage the correct disposal of e-trash, besides raising the population’s awareness of the importance to dispose of electronic materials minimizing damage to the environment.

Support for the initiative is part of the position of the Monaco Tourism Office, which promotes projects with social and environmental causes and advocates responsible tourism. According to Gisele Abrahão, director of GVA, marketing and communications company of the Monaco Tourism Office in Brazil. “Monaco is still very much associated with an exclusively luxury tourism. However, the principality has many other faces that people do not know. The country is investing more and more in sustainable initiatives and both government institutions and private companies are creating awareness campaigns and promoting projects that focus on protecting the environment and the development of marginalized societies. And because it is such an environmentally committed country, the tourism office is supporting this unprecedented initiative in São Paulo that will make a difference in the future of the city and the planet. ”

Brazil produces about 1.5 million tons of electronic waste annually, which makes it a champion in e-waste production in Latin America. However, the correct disposal is only made for 3% of this material. With the initiative, Paulistas will be able to dispose of old or no longer functioning electronic equipment, such as computers, tablets, cell phones, wires, chargers and mice, in an environmentally correct manner. The discarded products will be processed by the Program of the Ministry of Science Technology Innovations and Communications – CRC – Center for Reconstruction of Computers, a federal socio-environmental initiative. Discarded equipment that is reusable will be refurbished and donated to public schools in the form of digital inclusion computer labs. The non-reusable equipment and accessories will be dismantled and sent to environmental recycling, where materials such as plastics and metals will be recovered, becoming the raw material for the manufacture of new products.

“It may be surprising but sustainable responsibility in Monaco is something real and inspiring and that is why the Monaco tourism authority is very honored and proud to be committed to the cause and participate in the first public garbage collection campaign in Brazil in partnership with Greenk, “says Guy Antognelli, deputy general manager of the destination’s tourism office.
