The Inhotim Institute is considered one of the most important contemporary art museums in the world, with a large collection amidst a green area of incredible beauty. Therefore, the complex located in the city of Brumadinho, in Minas Gerais, is one of the most sought after destinations for lovers of culture and nature.

The city of Brumadinho is located in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, 51 km from the capital of Minas Gerais. The visitor that is a little more distant can save money buying airfare to Belo Horizonte at MaxMilhas. Check out our tips and learn why you should put Inhotim on your travel list.

Exuberant nature

Since 2010, Inhotim’s green area has been part of the Brazilian Network of Botanical Gardens, coordinated by the National Commission of Botanical Gardens. With over 5,000 botanical species, representing 181 families and 953 genera – 28% of all known plants on the planet – Inhotim boasts 140 hectares of visitation area, in addition to 145 hectares of private reserve in the Atlantic Forest domain. They are palm trees, imbés, anthuriums, cups of milk, bromeliads and more than 330 species of orchids. Landscaping explores all the aesthetic possibilities of the collection and strikes the undeniable beauty of nature.

Contemporary art

With an immense collection of contemporary art, Inhotim is a large museum complex consisting of pavilions, galleries and works exposed in the open air. As the visitor strolls through the garden, you will come across the various possibilities of visitation. Among the artists with works and permanent galleries in the museum are prominent names in contemporary Brazilian and world art such as Carroll Dunham, Zhang Huan, George Bures Miller, Chris Burden, Yayoi Kusama, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tunga, Helio Oiticica, Cildo Meireles, Adriana Varejão And Lygia Pape. Once inside the institute, access to all spaces is allowed.

Work-spectator interaction

The maxim “Do not touch, it’s art” by Narcisa Tamborindeguy does not apply to Inhotim. The museum has a number of galleries, pavilions and works in which art is only completed with the interaction of the public. One of the most emblematic examples is the Cosmococa gallery, by Hélio Oiticica and Neville D’Almeida, with five penetrable installations that provide the viewer with multisensory experiences. Another attraction not to be missed is the work The Origin of the Work of Art, by Marilá Dardot. It is a set of 150 ceramic pots in the form of letters, 12 types of seeds and gardening tools, which invites the viewer to write words and distribute them in the open, forming a planting of texts and ideas.

Multisensory travel

Several attractions in Inhotim appreciate the multisensory experience of visitors. All the senses are surfaced during the walk in the park, but the various galleries, pavilions and works also awaken all type of sensation. There are works that touch by sight, others by smell. Touch is constantly requested in the works of the most varied artists. But one of the highlights goes to Doug Aitken’s Sonic Pavilion. The artist specifically built for Inhotim a hole 200 meters deep in the ground and installed microphones that capture the Earth’s sound. The result is an empty glass pavilion where, from time to time, it is taken over by sound, guaranteeing a unique listening experience.

Cultural Activities

Visiting Inhotim is not just about walking through the park and contemplating the works of art. The Institute offers a series of activities that take place throughout the year, enriching the tour. They are spaces and meetings such as Inhotim Library, Educational Visitor Station, Panoramic Tour, Sensory Discovered Station, themed visits and restaurant. The activities are suitable for all the family and help to know more closely the whole structure of the museum, besides guaranteeing fun.

Where is?

The municipality has several lodging options and the arrival can be made by car or public transportation, starting from Belo Horizonte. As the space is great and there are many entertainment options, only one day of visitation can leave a little taste of want more. Then, it is advisable to set aside a little more time to enjoy the maximum of Inhotim.
