Kuks, the secret baroque of the Czech Republic!

Kuks, in Eastern Bohemia, is one of the most beautiful places in the baroque of the Czech Republic. Come discover the history of a place that could be compared in the time of its greatest splendor with the thermal cities of Bohemia and whose architectural value continues to surprise visitors from all over the world. Stroll through the gallery of beautiful statues like those of the “Czech Michelangelo” or the rarity of the world: a singular crib carved out of the rock.

The dominant point of the beautiful village with a multitude of wooden buildings is the monumental Baroque complex on the other side of the river that formerly belonged to the most important spa resorts of Czech countries. At the end of the seventeenth century, after the discovery of the sources of healing, Count Špork decided to build a sanatorium whose cultural life became famous thanks to dances, theaters and fighters. And although fame has already passed, you will still be impressed with the splendor and beauty of the baroque in its purest form.

The pharmacy full of treasures
The most important part of Kuks is undoubtedly its monumental hospital with the Church of the Holy Trinity stone and mysterious crypt. Inside, you can see the exhibition dedicated to the life of its founder and also to the medicine, because until today is soothes of the Czech Pharmaceutical Museum. Do not forget to visit the local baroque pharmacy, the second oldest in Europe. However, if you only expect current medications, you will be surprised: some pharmacy bottles contain potions like dragon blood, a hanged man’s head powder or wolf’s liver. If you like crystal and modern art, visit the exhibition of one of the most famous Czech sculptors of today: Bořek Šípek.

2. A walk of love

In front of the hospital building, you will be touched by the monumental statues of the Twelve Human Virtues and Vices. Its author is the brilliant sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun. Here you will find the representation of Faith, Love, Hope, Wisdom and Justice, and also of Pride, Avarice, Envy, Anger, Revenge and Despair.

3. A world rarity in the middle of a forest
With a pleasant walk, you can reach a world rarity that is in the forest near Kuks. Only here you will find the unique set of baroque sculptures carved directly on a rock that evokes a Bethlehem Crib that was created so there is a place to reflect and pray in the midst of an “inhospitable nature.” Look especially at the Adoration of the Shepherds and the arrival of the Magi or the beautiful well of Jacob.
