China inaugurates largest indoor ski resort in the world

The characteristic cold of Harbin, capital of northwestern China’s Heilongjiang province, can now be tapped all year round. Last June, the largest indoor ski resort in the world was inaugurated in the middle of the Chinese summer.

Harbin is world renowned for constant below-zero temperatures and snow for much of the year. Now, even in a summer with temperatures over 30ºC, locals and tourists can enjoy the snow and skiing.

The resort “Harbin Wanda City” has an area of 6,000m², and the internal ski area is 487 meters long, 150 meters wide and 114.5 meters high. There are six ski slopes, with a vertical drop of 80 meters. The facility holds up to 3,000 people at a time.

The project took three years to complete and relied on the work of more than 30,000 workers. And this is just one of the “Wanda City” ventures of China’s Wanda Group, which in 2016 has already announced its goal to become, by 2020, the largest tourism company in the world.

This is another example of great works that have been appearing in China in recent years. It is evident the Chinese intention of emerging world-wide with works and technological advances. The nation, so well known for copying, now wants to be recognized for its ability to create. Here in the heat of Guandong or in the cold of Heilongjiang, the investments do not stop and the works and great advances will continue to appear. Do not be surprised if the reverse happens and the Chinese become the copied ones.
