With condemnation of former President Lula, dollar plummets

The conviction in the first instance of the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to nine and a half years of jail stirred with the financial market. Following the release of the ruling in the early afternoon, the dollar plummeted and closed at the lowest price in nearly two months. The São Paulo Stock Exchange skyrocketed and also closed the day at the highest level since May.

Although the day started to fall, the commercial dollar intensified the low rate after 13:50, when the sentence was published. The currency closed the day sold at R $ 3,208, the lowest value since May 17, the day before the release of the recordings of businessman Joesley Batista. This was the fourth day followed by the fall of the American currency.

On the stock exchange, the day was also earnings. The São Paulo Stock Exchange’s Ibovespa index, which rose sharply throughout the morning, soared after the release of Judge Sergio Moro’s ruling and closed up 1.57% at 64,836 points. This was also the highest level since May 17.

Petrobras shares, the most traded, led the high. Ordinary shares (voting right in a shareholders’ meeting) rose 3.9% to R $ 13.58. Preferred shares (with preference in the distribution of dividends) rose 4.65%, to R $ 12.94.
