Railway circuit in Switzerland is a good opportunity to know the country

In order to celebrate 168 years since the first train that circulated in the Zurich region of Switzerland, the Grand Train Tour Switzerland railway circuit was created in 2015.

This circuit crosses 1,600 km of railroads of cantons, mountains and lakes of the country. It also has 44 attractions, 22 lakes, 11 UNESCO world heritage sites, five alpine valleys, four linguistic regions and two biosphere reserves.

By train, the route between Geneva and Zurich lasts around 2h40. Zurich has more than 50 museums, 100 art galleries and more than 2,000 restaurants for all tastes.

One of the most famous routes in the country is between Zermatt and St. Moritz and lasts just over seven hours. From the windows of the Glacier Express panoramic train, you can see pristine mountains, deep gorges and valleys, as well as 91 tunnels and 291 vertiginous bridges.

Routes in the circuit include so-called panoramic lines. The Wilhelm Tell Express, which runs from Lucerne to Lugano, combines lake cruise with train travel along the Gotthard railway in two of the four regions of the country with different languages and cultures: Lucerne (German) in the Central region; And the canton of Ticino, of strong Italian influence.

The Bernina Express runs along the Albula-Bernina route, whose landscape is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The railway crosses the border on a journey between Thusis and Tirano, already in Italy. The Glacier Express, on the other hand, enters the Grand Tour not only for its landscape from St. Moritz to Zermatt, where the Materhorn excels, but for the cuisine prepared on board in the kitchen of the composition. And there is also the GoldenPass Line, which connects Montreux, on Lake Geneva, to Interlaken and Lucerne.

To make the whole journey, the Swiss Pass is the best option. The pass is valid for the entire Swiss transport system, ie includes ships, buses, urban transport and trains. With a single ticket it is possible to know the whole country, using all means of transport. Young people between 16 and 25 years old and children from 4 to 15 years old have discounts on tickets. Children under 4 years travel free.
